Why this geography.

SEARCH did not pick 22 districts across two states by accident. The geography is a single dryland belt — the rain-shadow districts of Rayalaseema, the cyclone-prone Bay-of-Bengal coast, and the deep-interior Telangana mandals where seasonal migration once defined the rural economy. Watershed contiguity, not state borders, sets the operating boundary.

Telugu is the working language across both states, which lets programme staff move between districts without rebuilding local-language extension materials every time. The cluster is big enough to learn at scale, but small enough that the programmes team can still run an in-person review in any district within a single travel day.

The deepest village footprint sits in the dryland heartland — Guntur (132 villages), Anantapur (124 villages), Chittoor (96 villages), and Krishna (88 villages) — where SEARCH has anchored the longest-running watershed and livelihoods work.
